What 𑒂 means
It is Tirhuta’s independent letter for the long aa vowel.
Use 𑒂 when that vowel stands alone or begins a word or syllable. After a consonant, Tirhuta writes the same vowel with the dependent sign 𑒰. In the Malar Tirhuta transliteration layout, type aa or A for this letter.
Tirhuta developed from an eastern script tradition called Gauḍī or Proto-Bengali. The earliest Tirhuta inscriptions cited are temple inscriptions in Bihar and Nepal from the 13th century. By the 14th century, the script had become distinct from Bengali, Newari, and Odia.
What does 𑒂 mean when sent alone?
Alone, it identifies Tirhuta writing, not a mood.
Tirhuta was used to write Maithili and Sanskrit. Its settings include scholarly and religious manuscripts, pañjī genealogies (records of family lineages), personal correspondence, printed books, and educational publications.
In the 20th century, Devanagari became the primary script for Maithili, shifting Tirhuta toward specialist and ceremonial settings. A 2021 revival account describes online teaching, font design, and keyboard work. A recipient who does not read Tirhuta may need surrounding words to understand why the letter was sent.
This is a writing-system letter; in Tirhuta text, it reads as language, not a conversational tone.
Alone, it can look like an unexplained glyph to someone who does not read Tirhuta.
