What 𑚁 means
Use a Takri keyboard or Unicode character entry. Standard keyboard layouts may not include this script.
What does Takri AA mean?
It marks the independent long ā vowel in Takri. That is an a sound held longer than the short a.
Use 𑚁 when the vowel starts a syllable without a preceding consonant. After a consonant, Takri uses the dependent AA vowel sign 𑚭 instead; the two have different spelling roles.
Where did Takri come from?
Takri developed from the Sharada tradition through Devāśeṣa. These are earlier writing forms. Devāśeṣa emerged in the 14th century, and Takri differentiated from it in the 16th century.
Takri appeared in commercial and informal writing, as well as in records, manuscripts, inscriptions, postage, letters, and decrees. Regional forms served as official state scripts from the 17th century to the middle of the 20th century.
Takri is also related to Landa and Gurmukhi; Dogra is a closely related regional form. Devanagari later replaced Takri in many settings, while revival efforts have connected the script with regional literature.
A lone 𑚁 reads as Takri writing or as discussion of the script.
After a consonant, use the dependent sign 𑚭.
