What 𑚂 means
It writes an independent i vowel in Takri.
Use 𑚂 at the start of an i-vowel syllable or when that vowel stands alone. The dependent i sign, 𑚮, follows a consonant and marks its vowel; it cannot replace the independent letter in that position.
Takri descends from Sharada through Devāśeṣa, which emerged in the 14th century for religious and official writing. By the 16th century, popular Takri had taken shape for commercial and informal use. From the 17th century to the mid-20th century, it served as an official script in princely states, regional kingdoms with their own rulers. It wrote Chambeali, Dogri and other Pahari languages—a broad label for hill-region languages. It appeared alongside Devanagari until the late 19th century, then was gradually replaced by it. By 2025, revival efforts also sought to preserve access to literature in languages written in Takri.
Why does 𑚂 look different across fonts?
Takri has regional forms, not one fixed outline.
Reference charts show forms based mainly on Chamba usage, while other regional Takri forms can look quite different. Fonts can draw these variants differently. An empty box means the font lacks Takri coverage, even if the text still contains 𑚂.
Takri is related to Gurmukhi and Landa, and Dogra is closely related. These are script-family connections, not lookalike spellings to swap into Takri.

1Why does 𑚂 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
