What ଆ means
Switch to Odia input and choose the standalone aa vowel.
On Windows, Microsoft's 2024 guide describes two routes: Odia Phonetic turns English-key transliteration into suggestions you commit with Enter; Odia INSCRIPT uses a fixed layout, and WindowsSpace switches layouts.
Enter ଆ as one Unicode character. Its shape may look analyzable as ଅ ◌ା, but that sequence is not its text encoding.
Why is Odia writing so rounded?
Palm-leaf manuscript practice helped shape the rounded letters.
The earliest known inscription in the Odia language, written in the earlier Kalinga script, dates to 1051. Odia later developed within the Brahmic family of South Asian scripts, through eastern Siddhaṃ and Gaudi forms alongside the related Bengali-Assamese and Tirhuta script traditions.
Scribes incised palm leaves with metal styluses, and straight cuts could split the leaf, favoring curves. By the 15th century, the rounded Odia style was established in manuscripts. The script also appears in public inscriptions, land grants engraved on copper plates, literature, and religious texts. It writes Odia as well as Khondi and Santali, so the script alone does not always identify a text's language.
Neutral in Odia text: ଆ writes the long aa vowel as part of a word.
After a consonant, use ◌ା, not ଆ.
