Kannada letter ta

It is dental ta, with a built-in vowel a. For dental ta, your tongue touches the upper teeth. A vowel mark changes the vowel that follows the consonant.

The Kannada script evolved through Southern Brahmi, an older writing system, and regional forms. An inscription—a text carved into a lasting surface—from Tagarthi is an early candidate dated around 350 CE; Halmidi, around 450 CE, is an established landmark of early Kannada writing.

Inscriptions recorded political, administrative, and cultural matters. Kannada later appeared alongside Prakrit and Sanskrit, other languages used in royal and literary writing. The Kannada script also writes Tulu, another language of southern India.

How do I type ತ?

Use a Kannada phonetic or InScript keyboard. Select Kannada phonetic input, then type the Latin letters “ta”. InScript assigns letters to fixed keys; use its own key map.

Nudi-style keyboards use another layout. If a familiar key produces the wrong letter, check which Kannada input method is active.

Why does ತ change in a word?

Vowel marks and consonant clusters alter its appearance. The virama, a mark that removes the built-in a, produces ತ್. This consonant can then join another consonant in a cluster, a group pronounced without an intervening vowel.

In ತ್ವ (tva) and ತ್ರ (tra), connected consonants may appear in a compact joined form. A font or app without full Kannada support may instead display the components separately.
