96/256

⡟ is one Braille cell with dots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 raised: a full left column of four dots plus two dots at the top right. Online it usually turns up as one tiny block in Braille text art. In Braille itself, dots 1–5 are the letter q, and dot 7 often marks a capital in eight-dot computer Braille.

What ⡟ means

Each Braille character works as a tiny 24 pixel grid. Unicode includes all 256 ways to raise eight dots, so lining them up draws pictures, logos and graphs in plain text with finer detail than ordinary letters allow. In ⡟ the lit pixels are the whole left column and the top two of the right column. You'll meet this Braille art in chat messages, comments, social media posts and graphs drawn in command-line programs.

Fonts decide how it looks. Some draw unraised dots as faint empty circles, some leave them blank, and some make the characters wider than spaces, so a picture that looked crisp for the sender can arrive skewed or speckled.

What does ⡟ mean to someone who reads Braille?

Q in most Latin-script Braille, with dot 7 added. A classic Braille cell has six dots: 1–3 down the left column, 4–6 down the right. Dots 1-2-3-4-5 are q in Louis Braille's alphabet, shared by most languages written in Latin letters. Eight-dot Braille, used mainly on computers and refreshable Braille displays, adds dot 7 under the left column and dot 8 under the right. Many computer Braille tables use dot 7 to mark a capital, which would make ⡟ a capital Q, but tables differ by country and device, so the exact reading depends on the code in use.

Worth knowing

  • Braille grew from Charles Barbier's 12-dot raised-point writing, published in 1815 and tried at a Paris school for blind students in 1821. Louis Braille shrank it to six dots that fit under one fingertip and published his system in 1829.

Questions people ask

2

Can I use ⡟ to write a word?

Not for ordinary text. It shows a Braille cell's dot shape; blind readers' devices handle Braille from normal letters. Use Braille characters when the cell itself matters, or for art.

Why does my Braille art look broken?

Usually the font. Fonts give Braille characters different widths and draw empty dots differently; a monospaced font with Braille support keeps the picture aligned.
