Braille dots 1-2-4-7

76/256

⡋ is a Braille pattern with dots 1, 2, 4 and 7 present: three on the left and one at the upper right. It belongs to eight-dot Braille, used for purposes including computer text. The numbers describe dot positions, not a word or number you can read directly.

What ⡋ means

Two are at the top; two more are on the left.

Viewed from the reading side, an eight-dot Braille cell has two columns of four positions. The left column runs 1, 2, 3, 7 from top to bottom; the right runs 4, 5, 6, 8. In ⡋, positions 1, 2, 4 and 7 are occupied; the others are empty. Dot 7 is at the bottom left, with an empty position between it and dot 2.

Ordinary six-dot Braille uses only the top three rows. Eight-dot Braille adds a bottom row, allowing more distinct patterns within one cell.

What can you read from ⡋?

The pattern is fixed; its reading follows the Braille code.

Braille is writing read through raised dots, used by blind readers in many languages. A cell is one small group of dots. Braille codes assign patterns to letters, numbers, punctuation or other signs; Unicode preserves the dot pattern without assigning it one universal reading.

To interpret ⡋ in Braille text, identify the language and code and read the surrounding cells. In a picture made from rows of Braille characters, it can instead be a piece of the drawing.

Worth knowing

  • In 1821, Louis Braille’s school in Paris tested Charles Barbier’s twelve-dot system. Braille later developed a compact six-dot cell that fit beneath a fingertip and published his system in 1829.

Can I feel this character on a phone screen?

No. On an ordinary screen, ⡋ is a visible character, not raised dots. Tactile Braille requires embossed material or a Braille display with pins that rise to form the cells.
