What ⡒ means
The code and context decide what this cell represents.
Braille codes map cells to letters, punctuation, numbers, and specialist notation. Eight-dot Braille adds two positions to the six-dot layout.
How did Louis Braille reshape raised-dot writing?
Louis Braille reshaped earlier raised-dot writing into a six-dot system. Charles Barbier's 12-dot system came first; Braille's 1829 publication covered words and music.
Tradition calls Barbier’s work military “night writing.” A Library of Congress review in 2022 challenges that origin: Barbier’s own account described writing for people unable to read print, including blind readers.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⡒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
