What 🗙 means

On a control, it closes or abandons the current step. This X mark is a button label.

Early-modern English records used a cross as a personal mark instead of a signature. X in mathematics is documented by 1618; English mathematician William Oughtred used it in a 1631 book. A U.S. postal rule in 1847 specified a pen X to cancel stamps. These predate this character.

Neutral and functional; beside a control it reads as an instruction.

For serious cancellations, name the action.
