What 𐋊 means
Its sound remains debated.
Scholars transcribe it as β (Greek beta). Greek spellings of some Carian names show mb here. Whether it stood for mb or a b-like sound shaped by context is debated.
The script was used to write Carian, the ancient language of southwest Anatolia. The earliest dated find from Caria is a jug graffito at Hydai (now Damlıboğaz), dated to the last quarter of the seventh century BCE. The Egyptian record includes mercenaries’ graffiti, tomb texts, and dedications.
Carian texts usually run left to right in Caria, and right to left in Egypt; word dividers are few. The link to Greek is debated; many sound values differ.
