Chorasmian Number Four

25/28

𐿈 stands for four in the Chorasmian numeral system, once used to write the Chorasmian language. Its numerals run right to left, with signs for one through four combined to form larger values. Typing this historical character takes a Unicode input method; it has no standard keyboard key.

What 𐿈 means

It records the value four, not a letter. Chorasmian, also called Khwarezmian, was an extinct Eastern Iranian language written in an ancient script around the Amu Darya delta in Central Asia.

The earliest recognisable written evidence for the wider tradition is on silver bowls from the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Its cursive form appears in coin inscriptions from the 2nd century CE onward, then on wood, leather, silver vessels, and bone containers at Tok Kala dated to the 7th and 8th centuries CE.

The Chorasmian script developed from Imperial Aramaic, an ancient Aramaic writing system, and is related to Parthian, Pahlavi, and Old Sogdian scripts. Chorasmian number-writing normally runs right to left, with larger units first: one through four have standalone signs, while five through nine combine them. Arabic-script glosses and law books preserve later Chorasmian from the 11th–14th centuries.

How do I type Chorasmian number four?

Use a Unicode hexadecimal input method.

In supporting Windows apps such as Microsoft Word or Outlook, type 10FC8, select the code, then press AltX. On GNOME or other GTK desktops, press CtrlShiftU, type 10fc8, then press Space or Enter.

On macOS, built-in Unicode Hex Input accepts only four hexadecimal digits, so it cannot enter this five-digit code; use Character Viewer instead. If 𐿈 appears as a box, the active font setup has no Chorasmian glyph. As of October 2026, Noto Sans Chorasmian is one available font with script coverage.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐿈 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
