Frog Emoji

🐸 is a single character, Frog Face in Unicode (short name simply "frog"), approved in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 with the first big batch of emoji carried over from Japanese phone carriers. Every platform draws it the same way: a round green face seen from the front, wide mouth, two bulging eyes on top. There is no full-body frog, no toad and no tadpole emoji, which is why this page fills the pond with neighbours instead: 🪷 Lotus for the lily pad, 💧 🌊 for the water, 🪰 🦟 for dinner.

In a chat, 🐸 on its own is usually literal or playful: a frog you saw, a frog-shaped thing, a cute little green creature. It also stands in for "hop to it", for a croaky voice, and for the ugly-duckling kind of charm, the frog who turns out to be a prince. What changes the meaning is what comes after it, and the one pairing everyone knows is a cup of tea.

Frog and tea emoji: 🐸☕ and "but that's none of my business"

🐸☕ is Kermit the Frog sipping Lipton iced tea. The photo comes from a 2014 Lipton commercial tied to the film Muppets Most Wanted; in June 2014 it became an image macro with the caption "but that's none of my business", and the frog-and-tea pair has meant that ever since: I'm saying something pointed about someone, and then pretending I didn't. "She posted a gym selfie and then ordered pizza 🐸☕" is the whole genre in one line. Because "tea" is also slang for gossip, 🐸☕ or 🐸🍵 can simply mean "spill the tea" or "I'm just here sipping and watching". Add 👀 when you want to say you noticed and you're waiting.

The other famous frog is Pepe, Matt Furie's comic character from Boy's Club (2005), who spread as a reaction image and in Discord and Twitch emotes. Some uses of Pepe were taken up by hate groups, and in 2016 the Anti-Defamation League added certain versions of the character to its database of hate symbols; Furie has fought to reclaim him. None of that attaches to 🐸 itself, which stays an innocent cartoon frog, but it is why "frog emoji meaning reddit" is a real search. If someone sends 🐸 from nowhere, read it as cute or cheeky before anything else.

Frog prince, lucky frogs and frogs in other cultures

The frog prince is the first tale in the Brothers Grimm collection of 1812, The Frog King, or Iron Heinrich. In the original the princess does not kiss the frog; she throws him against the wall in disgust and he turns into a prince anyway. The kiss came later, through English retellings, and it is the kiss people mean when they write 🐸💋🤴 or "you have to kiss a lot of frogs" 🐸🐸🐸💋. Disney's The Princess and the Frog (2009) gives you 👸🐸👑 and the New Orleans bayou, which is why princess and the frog emoji combo is one of the few frog combos people search for by name.

In Japan the frog, 蛙 kaeru, sounds exactly like kaeru "to return", so small frog charms are given for a safe return home and tucked into wallets so that spent money comes back. In ancient Egypt the frog was Heqet, a goddess of birth and fertility, and the frog hieroglyph 𓆏 survives in Unicode; the tadpole hieroglyph was the sign for one hundred thousand, because of how many a single pond produces. In Puerto Rico the tiny coquí frog is a national symbol, named after its two-note night call. And in Chinese, 蟾 is the toad whose three-legged form sits on the moon and spits coins for luck.

Cottagecore frog emoji: toadstools, ponds and rain

The frog is the unofficial mascot of cottagecore, goblincore and everything mossy and damp. The building blocks are 🐸 with 🍄 or the newer 🍄‍🟫 Brown Mushroom (Emoji 15.1, 2023), a 🪷 Lotus for a lily pad (Emoji 14.0, 2021), 🌿 🍃 🌱 for greenery, 🍀 or ☘️ for luck, 💧 🌧️ ☔ for the rain a frog loves and 🌙 ✨ 🧚 for the fairy-tale version. 🫧 Bubbles (also 2021) read as pond froth or as frog spawn, which is as close as emoji get to tadpoles. A bio line such as 🐸🍄🌿 or 🪷🐸💧 says the whole aesthetic without a word.

For the frog's own point of view, give it dinner: 🪰 Fly and 🪱 Worm arrived in 2020, 🦟 Mosquito and 🦗 Cricket in 2018, and 🐛 🐌 🦋 were there from the start. 🐸🪰 is a frog about to eat, 🐸🦟 is the one creature that is glad mosquito season is here. Its cold-blooded cousins 🐊 🦎 🐍 🐢 fill out a swamp or a reptile-house scene; the full set of those lives on the Dinosaur & Reptile Emoji page, and every insect is on the Bug & Insect Emoji page.

Frog text symbols, Discord and how to type the frog emoji

There is no frog in the ordinary symbol fonts, so frog text symbol searches usually end at a kaomoji: ( ･ิ‿･ิ) or (◉ө◉) for a wide-eyed frog, or the classic ʕ•̫͡•ʔ-style faces reshaped with round eyes. Unicode does have real frog characters, just not emoji: the Chinese and Japanese 蛙 (frog), 蟾 (toad) and 蚪 (tadpole), the Egyptian hieroglyph 𓆏, and two tiny pixel frogs 𜷻 𜷼, which came to Unicode 16.0 in 2024 from the character set of an old home computer. They sit in the last group of the grid; whether they display depends on the fonts installed on the reader's device.

On Discord, Slack and GitHub type :frog: and it turns into 🐸; Discord servers also carry hundreds of custom frog emotes, most of them Pepe variants, which only show on that server. On an iPhone or Android phone, open the emoji keyboard and search "frog"; on Windows press the Windows key + . and type frog; on a Mac press Control + Command + Space. The image is the same character everywhere, so a frog copied from this page pastes correctly into WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok captions and usernames.
