cuneiform sign amar

Cuneiform sign Amar

44/922

𒀫 is the Sumerian cuneiform sign AMAR, whose range includes “calf” and “young” rather than one fixed modern translation. A Uruk III animal-list tablet (ca. 3200–3000 BCE) places it in a scribal list; later cuneiform use also gives it values such as “youngster,” “chick,” “son,” and “descendant.” Its Unicode shape stands for an abstract sign, while fonts can show period or regional styles.

What 𒀫 means

Read AMAR in context; “calf” is one value.

AMAR is a Sumerian sign, not a drawing with one caption. Its semantic range includes “calf,” “young,” “youngster,” “chick,” “son,” and “descendant.” In Akkadian writing, scribes could also use it for sounds, with readings conventionally transliterated zur or ṣur.

It is not a tiny calf picture. Cuneiform signs could stand for a word, a syllable, or part of a compound, and the shape alone does not identify which job the sign is doing. A single 𒀫 cannot be translated safely without the surrounding signs and language.

When is AMAR first attested?

An early witness is an Uruk III lexical tablet.

A clay tablet excavated at Uruk, modern Warka, from Uruk III (ca. 3200–3000 BCE) belongs to an animal list; its preserved entries repeat AMAR.

Cuneiform first developed for bookkeeping, recording quantities, goods, and workers. Scribes later used lexical lists—organized lists of words and signs—to teach and standardize them. Cuneiform was adapted to Akkadian and other languages, while bilingual lists preserved Sumerian readings.

What does AMAR do in a compound?

A neighboring sign can change the conventional reading.

In the Sumerian spelling áb-amar, 𒀊 (the cow sign) plus 𒀫 (AMAR) means “mother cow”: AMAR contributes the calf term. This is a conventional written compound, not a picture sentence.

Sumerian–Akkadian cuneiform was used across periods and regions, so one abstract sign can have different visible forms. Unicode identifies the sign; the font draws a representative shape.

Alone, 𒀫 signals cuneiform more clearly than any particular English word.

Do not send it expecting someone to read “calf” or “son” from the glyph alone.

Questions people ask

2

Can 𒀫 mean “son” by itself?

No. “Son” and “descendant” belong to its wider historical range; alone, the sign does not reliably communicate either meaning.

Why does 𒀫 look different in different fonts?

Cuneiform signs have regional and period styles. Unicode identifies the abstract sign, while each font draws a representative shape.
