cuneiform sign ab

Cuneiform Sign AB

11/922

𒀊 is a sign in cuneiform, an ancient writing system made by pressing wedge-shaped marks into clay; it has no single fixed translation. Its value depends on language, period, and neighboring signs. In scholarly transliteration, capital letters can mark a word sign while lowercase letters give a reading.

What 𒀊 means

There is no single English word for it; context picks the value.

In Sumerian writing, it can stand for a word, a syllable, or a sound value. Sign lists give readings such as ab for “sea” or “window”; the sign alone cannot choose between them.

In scholarly transliteration, capital AB names the sign or marks a Sumerian word sign (a Sumerogram) in Akkadian text; lowercase ab usually gives a reading. This is a notation convention, not a different character.

How did 𒀊 develop?

It grew out of early picture-like writing, not a single invention.

Recognizable ancestors of this sign appear in early Sumerian tablets from Uruk around 3100 BCE. These tablets record practical accounts; a scholarly grammar also lists áb, “cow,” among the concrete-object values in that early system. That does not establish “cow” as this sign’s fixed origin.

Scribes pressed reed styluses into clay, turning drawn forms into wedge impressions; sign shapes and orientations changed with time and place. Cuneiform was later adapted from Sumerian to Akkadian, another ancient Mesopotamian language, and others. A sign could serve as a word, a syllable, or a borrowed Sumerian word sign.

Is 𒀊 the same as 𒀖?

No: 𒀖 is a separate sign, not a font style of 𒀊.

The scholarly name AB₂ identifies a different cuneiform sign. A font can draw signs in period-specific styles, but a changed outline does not by itself change the encoded identity.

To read a passage, keep the sign identification together with its language, period, and neighbors. The lone glyph does not determine which value an ancient text uses.

Specialist and historical: it suits a sign sample or quotation in a cuneiform context.

Do not label it simply “cow” or “sea” without the language and surrounding text.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𒀊 look different in another font?

Cuneiform fonts can use different historical styles; a change in outline alone does not make it a different sign.

Is 𒀊 safe to send to a boss?

Only with an explanation. A general reader may not recognize it outside a cuneiform discussion, so give the intended reading when it matters.
