cuneiform sign imin

Cuneiform Sign Imin

340/922

𒅓 represents the Sumerian word conventionally transliterated imin, “seven.” In imin-bi, a literal group of seven can widen to mean the whole set. The surrounding words tell you whether the count stays literal.

Text symbol

What 𒅓 means

It writes the Sumerian count-word imin, “seven.”

The imin reading is attested from Early Dynastic IIIa onward, an early period in Sumerian history. Cuneiform developed alongside administrative record-keeping, where scribes tracked goods and quantities; this sign supplied the word for seven.

In later scholarly Sumerian, imin-bi literally means “their seven” and can extend from a group of seven to the complete set. An account favors a literal count; a literary or royal phrase may use the wider sense.

How can 𒅓 mean the whole set?

In imin-bi, “their seven” can stand for the whole set.

One royal inscription is interpreted as Egal-imin-bi-lugalene, “Palace that Rules All Kings.” A sign in the inscription is damaged, so this reading is a scholarly interpretation rather than a simple label.

Why does 𒅓 look different in another font?

A different wedge drawing can still be the same sign.

Cuneiform signs vary by period, region, and scribal style. Unicode's reference glyphs are chiefly in the Ur III style, a period in Sumerian history; a font made for another period or region may arrange the wedges differently.

If 𒅓 appears as a box, the current font likely lacks cuneiform coverage. That display gap does not change the encoded sign.

Specialist and historical: without Sumerian or cuneiform context, a newcomer cannot tell whether it names seven or the whole set.

For an ordinary modern count, do not leave this sign unexplained; readers need a cuneiform gloss.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𒅓 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Cuneiform block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
