cuneiform sign um

Cuneiform Sign Um

798/922

𒌝 is a sign in cuneiform, the wedge-shaped writing system of ancient Mesopotamia, and its reading depends on language and context. In Sumerian it can spell the sound conventionally transcribed “um.” In Amarna letters, 𒌝𒈠 opens the sender’s message or quoted words.

What 𒌝 means

Its reading depends on the text around it.

The earliest surviving Sumerian examples place 𒌝 in Old Sumerian-period texts from Lagash, a Sumerian city, where it writes the sound conventionally transliterated “um.” That dates an attested use, not the sign’s invention.

Cuneiform began as a way to record goods and administration. By the middle of the third millennium BCE, scribes also used it for economic, religious, political, literary, and scholarly records.

Why does 𒌝 have several readings?

**Cuneiform signs can spell sounds or stand for whole words.

The same sign can do either job, and one sign may have more than one value. Language, period, and neighboring signs help identify the intended reading; the outline alone cannot tell you which English words fit.

In Akkadian letters from the fourteenth-century BCE Amarna archive, the sequence 𒌝𒈠 opens the sender’s message or quoted speech. The sequence has that formula’s job; a lone 𒌝 does not mean “message.”

Why do cuneiform forms of 𒌝 vary?

Cuneiform signs changed across eras, regions, and writing styles.

Surviving forms differ by region and period, and between careful carving and quick handwriting, so no one outline fits every tablet. The Unicode character identifies the abstract sign rather than one exact historical hand.

A transliteration such as “um” may point to more than one sign. Recovering the exact character can require the language, period, and source tablet.

Why does 𒌝 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Cuneiform block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
