What 𒌴 means
The main Sumerian reading is ur₄, “to pluck.”
Other Sumerian uses include “gather” and “convulse,” plus a noun for a fish; the surrounding text decides which reading fits. The scholarly label UR₄ identifies the sign but does not give its full meaning by itself.
Cuneiform began at Uruk during Uruk IV (about 3500–3200 BCE), with early writing used for administrative records of goods and services. It was later adapted to write Akkadian and other languages. One cuneiform passage connects UR₄ and KIG₂: there, UR₄ is a graphic simplification of the sign labeled KIG₂.
