What ꚁ means
It represented an Abkhaz d sound pronounced with rounded lips.
The earliest Cyrillic-based Abkhaz alphabet dates to 1862, and a Gospel sample from 1912 preserves Dwe. The letter served a practical purpose: writing Abkhaz in a Cyrillic-based alphabet.
Abkhaz writing later used Latin and Georgian scripts before returning to Cyrillic in 1954. In modern Abkhaz, Дә writes the corresponding sound; the sound remained while the spelling changed.
A historical letter for reading older Abkhaz texts.
For modern Abkhaz spelling, use Дә.
