What д means
It stands for a sound, not a whole word. Its old name, dobro, meant “good,” but the letter carries no meaning of its own inside words.
Cyrillic developed in Bulgaria around 893 for Church Slavonic, a written language of religious books and services, after the earlier Glagolitic alphabet. Early Cyrillic inscriptions are dated 921, 931, and 943.
Cyrillic later came to write Ukrainian, Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian and other languages; read д within the language and word it belongs to.
Why does д look like g in italics?
Some italic forms resemble Latin g. Russian fonts based on handwriting can give д a g-like shape; Bulgarian and Serbian traditions use different forms. Latin g is still a separate character.
