What Ч means
Use a Cyrillic keyboard layout that includes Ч. Add a layout for the language you are writing in your device’s keyboard settings, switch to it, and type the capital letter.
What sound does Ч make?
It marks a ch-like consonant. The start of English “cheese” is a rough guide, but the sound varies by language; Russian Ч is softer than that English sound. In Latin transliteration, it may appear as č or ch, depending on the system. Those spellings represent Ч in Latin script; they are not alternate Cyrillic forms.
How does Ч fit into Cyrillic history?
Ч belongs to the Slavic writing tradition. Glagolitic, an earlier Slavic script, was used in a Byzantine mission to translate Slavic liturgical books in 863 CE. Pupils developed early Cyrillic in the First Bulgarian Empire around 893 CE. One palaeographic account connects Ч with the Glagolitic letter Cherv; early Cyrillic kept Glagolitic sound values while its visible forms were largely Greek-derived.
Ч is an ordinary spelling letter in Cyrillic text.

Questions people ask
1Why does Ч show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
