What ᡂ means
ᡂ marks the ch sound of Chinese pinyin in Inner Mongolian writing.
Pinyin is the Latin spelling system used for Mandarin. Here ch names the consonant at the start of a syllable, not a full syllable on its own. Adding Mongolian vowel letter ᠢ writes the full syllable; chi is its pinyin spelling.
Traditional Mongolian script was adapted from Old Uyghur in the early thirteenth century; Old Uyghur had developed from Sogdian writing. The Genghis Stele, an inscribed stone monument linked to an event in 1225, is one of the earliest surviving Mongolian inscriptions. Traditional Mongolian continued in use in Inner Mongolia, while Mongolia shifted to Cyrillic in the 1940s and revived traditional Mongolian in the 1990s.
How do I type ᡂ?
On Microsoft’s Traditional Mongolian (Standard) layout, use ShiftQ. Microsoft’s layout documentation was updated 2024-10-24; this shortcut is specific to that layout.
Traditional Mongolian is written vertically, and letters join within words. The shaping engine and font support affect their connected form, so this isolated character may look unlike its in-word shape or appear disconnected.

Do not swap ᠴ for ᡂ: in this table they stand for pinyin q and ch, respectively.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ᡂ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
