What Р means

Its shape comes from Greek rho. Early Cyrillic adapted Greek letterforms to write Old Church Slavonic, a Slavic language used in Christian worship. That history explains the P-shaped form; Р represents an r sound in words written with Cyrillic.

An early Cyrillic inscription near Preslav dates to 921. That marks the script's use, not the invention of Р. Glagolitic, another early Slavic script, was devised around 862 for Christian texts. Cyrillic later spread through Bulgarian and Russian writing traditions to other languages. The pronunciation of Р varies by language, while its role as an r-letter remains.

Р is an ordinary Cyrillic letter; in a Latin-script name or URL, its P-like shape can disguise a character substitution.

A P-shaped letter alone does not prove a URL or username is genuine.
