What щ means
It stands for a consonant sound, not a word. Ukrainian and Rusyn pronounce it as sh followed by ch, as in борщ; Russian makes it a long, soft sh-like sound; Bulgarian says sht. Shch is just a way to write the letter in Latin script, not a universal pronunciation guide.
Early Cyrillic developed in the ninth and tenth centuries for Slavic Christian writing, translation and schooling. A common account links щ to shta, a letter of Glagolitic, an earlier Slavic alphabet, though how it was built is debated. Old sound values differed too: щ marked an sht-like sequence in Old Church Slavonic and a softened sh-plus-ch sequence in Old Russian.
What does a lone щ mean?
Ask what word or language they meant. Alone, щ could be a fragment, a keyboard test or a language example. The letter itself does not tell you which.
An ordinary letter in Cyrillic words; unclear when sent alone.
A lone щ does not reveal the sender’s attitude.

3Questions people ask
1Why does щ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
