What ꙣ means
It marks a softened “d” in historical Church Slavonic writing. “Softened” means the tongue rises toward the hard palate as you say the sound. Church Slavonic is a literary Slavic language used in Orthodox worship. Writers marked softened consonants with a hook after the letter or with a fused form such as ꙣ. In early manuscript examples ꙣ usually follows ж, forming жꙣ. Related fused letters mark softened л and м. Later Church Slavonic texts generally dropped these written marks.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꙣ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Cyrillic Extended-B block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

ꙣ\A663Why is ꙣ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
