What ѿ means
It writes the Church Slavonic preposition ot (“from”) and the prefix ot-. This is a spelling convention, not a decorative join.
The form developed over time: a superscripted OT appears in Glagolitic writing, and Cyrillic manuscripts later settled on a joined form. A historical reconstruction connects its prominence with the repeated word ot in Gospel headings and with Greek vertical ligatures. The reading remained ot, although scribal use varied.
The joined Cyrillic form brings together omega and tverdo, the names of its component letters. Its earlier Glagolitic predecessor is part of the same writing history.
How do I type ѿ?
Use Unicode input to enter this standalone character. On Linux/GNOME, try CtrlShiftU, type 047F, then press Space or Enter; this route is documented in 2015.
A Church Slavonic virtual keyboard for Google Docs is documented in 2026 as an on-screen inserter, not a remapped physical layout. Typing the component letters ѡ and т separately leaves two characters, not the ligature ѿ.
The character code does not dictate one historical design. Typefaces can follow different Church Slavonic recensions, and a font without the needed repertoire may show a missing-glyph box.
Historical and liturgical: ѿ signals Church Slavonic spelling, not ordinary modern Cyrillic typing.
Outside a Church Slavonic text, use ordinary от; ѿ can look archaic or out of place.

Don't confuse it with
1от The ordinary two-letter spelling ot. In the Church Slavonic convention, it is not the same encoded character as the ligature ѿ.
Questions people ask
1Why does ѿ look different in each font?
It can. A Unicode note from 2015 explains that typefaces can follow different historical styles; a font lacking the needed characters may show a missing-glyph box.
