What 🖺 means
It marks a document that combines text and a picture.
Its documented trail runs through office software. A 2011 Unicode proposal gathered Wingdings and Webdings symbols already used in Windows and Mac documents; it says the original Wingdings fonts arrived with Windows 3.1 in 1992. The fonts served as picture-based labels for office material. Unicode placed this sign alongside 🖹, the text-centered document, and 🖻, the picture-centered document.
Why does 🖺 look different?
Fonts draw it, so its outline varies by typeface.
The page, text lines, and picture can take different shapes across fonts. If a font lacks the character, it may show an empty box instead. Use a typeface that includes the character; an old font-only Wingdings or Webdings slot is not a substitute for the Unicode character.
Neutral and technical; it fits office, file, and documentation talk.
Alone, it labels a file type; add a file name or link when you mean one specific document.

1Why does 🖺 show as a square?
The font on that device lacks a drawing for it. A font that supports the character will display it; the square is a missing-glyph placeholder, not a change to the character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
