What ⊤ means
It denotes truth, tautology, or the greatest element, depending on the notation. In logic, it can name verum (truth) or a tautology, a statement true in every case. Lattice theory studies ordered structures; there ⊤ marks the greatest element. Type theory can use it for an always-true proposition.
An APL note from 2000 records competing Bosworth and London names for tack symbols. APL is a programming language with its own mathematical notation.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
