Elbasan Letter Le

17/40

𐔐 is the Elbasan letter for the plain L sound, like the L in “leaf”; dotted 𐔑 represents doubled L. The Elbasan alphabet was made for Albanian biblical writing, and its earliest known witness is the 1761 Elbasan Gospel Manuscript, an Albanian Orthodox Bible translation. Today, this is a historical Albanian script; standard Albanian uses the Latin alphabet.

What 𐔐 means

It writes the ordinary L sound in Elbasan spelling. The separate dotted letter 𐔑 writes a doubled or held-longer L. The two letters encode different sounds, so they are not interchangeable.

The Elbasan Gospel Manuscript is an Albanian Orthodox translation of the Bible, produced at St Jovan Vladimir’s Church. The script gave Albanian biblical writing its own alphabet. Unicode describes most Elbasan letter shapes as original creations; a few recall Greek or Cyrillic letters, but resemblance alone does not establish borrowing. Albanian later standardized on the Latin alphabet, leaving Elbasan as a historical script.

As of 2026, this is historical Elbasan-script context; standard Albanian uses the Latin alphabet.

Do not read 𐔐 as doubled L; the dot belongs to 𐔑.
