What 🗋 means
It marks a blank document or newly started file. In a message, read it as a document cue: a draft, file, or text area ready to be filled. It can also signal a reset or fresh start, but it does not carry a standard emotional reaction.
The concept predates the code point. A 1990 SunView guide used “Empty Document” for a text-editor command that cleared the working text and started fresh; the documented item is the operation, not this exact encoded glyph.
A 2012 Unicode/ISO draft placed it among office and interface document forms and glossed it “tall file1,” beside blank notes, pages, and text-filled documents. As it moved from an editor control to a text character, the medium changed while the document meaning stayed the anchor.
Why does 🗋 look different from 📄?
Its outline comes from the selected font. As of 2026, 🗋 has no emoji presentation; its shape is drawn by the font in use.
With font fallback, an app may show a missing-glyph box when no available font contains it. That is a rendering failure, not a new meaning. 📄 is a separate page character, so switching to it changes the symbol rather than repairing this one.
Formal and file-oriented; it reads like office or editor vocabulary, not a reaction.
Sent alone, it may look like an empty attachment; add a word when the document type matters.

1Does this symbol mean a deleted file?
No. In 1990, a SunView text-editor guide used “Empty Document” for a command that cleared working text; it describes an editor action, not deleting a saved file.
