What ⅟ means
It begins a fraction; ⅟4 means “one over four.”
The character combines ordinary 1 and the fraction slash (⁄) into the numerator portion. The number after it is the denominator: ⅟8 means one eighth. On its own, ⅟ has no complete fraction value.
How do I type ⅟?
Use a Unicode input method or a character reference.
On Windows with Unicode input enabled, type Alt+215F. In HTML, use the hexadecimal character reference ⅟; in source code that accepts Unicode escapes, use \u215F.
In layout software, automatic fraction formatting can turn typed digits and a slash into a built fraction. It depends on the selected font: without numerator and denominator forms, the software may leave the text unchanged.
Technical and typographic; uncommon in ordinary prose.
Alone, ⅟ starts a fraction but does not complete one.

1Why does ⅟ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
