What ⴈ means
This is the Nuskhuri letter used for the Georgian “i” sound.
The oldest form of Georgian writing is Asomtavruli. The earliest surviving Georgian writing is a church inscription in Palestine from the 5th century; the earliest dated inscription found in Georgia is Bolnisi Sioni, from 493/494 AD. Accounts differ on who created the script, but its early institutional use is tied to Christian worship and Bible translation. Nuskhuri developed as a manuscript form by the 9th century, while Mkhedruli was used for secular Georgian by the 11th century. ⴈ gives a text a historical or church-associated style; modern Georgian uses Mkhedruli for everyday writing.
Why does ⴈ appear as a box?
A font without this character cannot draw it.
Unsupported characters may appear as a square, question mark, or blank. Nuskhuri has separately encoded characters, so a missing glyph affects display, not the underlying text.
A font or app with Georgian Supplement coverage can display the character.
ⴈ gives Georgian text a historical or church-associated tone; Mkhedruli is the ordinary choice for modern writing.
In a modern Georgian word, ⴈ can look deliberately archaic or liturgical.

Questions people ask
1Is ⴈ just a font style for modern Georgian?
No. ⴈ belongs to Nuskhuri, a distinct Georgian script form; changing a font does not turn Mkhedruli text into Nuskhuri.
