What ⴎ means
It writes the ejective p sound in Nuskhuri Georgian.
Its Georgian name is par (პარი). An ejective p is made with the voice box closed and a quick outward push of air. Nuskhuri ⴔ, phar, is a different letter: its p has a puff of breath.
This is an evolved letterform, not a one-off invention: Nuskhuri developed from Asomtavruli into a more compact manuscript hand. The oldest cited Asomtavruli inscription dates to 430 AD; the oldest cited Nuskhuri inscription is from 859 AD.
Is ⴎ used in modern Georgian?
Mostly no; it belongs to older, church-associated Georgian writing.
Khutsuri paired Asomtavruli Ⴎ with Nuskhuri ⴎ as uppercase and lowercase forms. Mkhedruli, the modern Georgian script, was attested in the 10th century and became the everyday form; its corresponding letter is პ.
Khutsuri remains in liturgical use as of 2026. In a modern Georgian message, ⴎ usually signals an intentional historical or church-script reference, rather than ordinary spelling.
Older Georgian manuscript and church-script register; it stands out in ordinary modern Georgian text.
For everyday Georgian, use modern პ; ⴎ is the Nuskhuri form.

1Questions people ask
2Why does ⴎ show as a box or a different shape?
It is usually a font issue. A font without Georgian Supplement coverage may show a box; fonts also draw Nuskhuri differently because Unicode’s chart is a reference, not a required outline.
Could ⴎ stand for a number?
Yes. In the traditional Georgian numeral system, par represented 80.
