What 𐌷 means
It is the Gothic alphabet’s letter transliterated as h. It represents a letter in Gothic text, not a standalone message.
A 9th-century copy known as the Salzburg–Vienna manuscript records the variant name haal. Scholars reconstruct Gothic hagl from the Germanic word for hail; that name labels the letter.
How did the Gothic letter enter the alphabet?
The Gothic alphabet was designed for Bible translation. It was developed in the 4th century for Wulfila, a Gothic bishop, to translate scripture into Gothic. The surviving Codex Argenteus, a copy of the Gothic Bible, was written in Italy in the early 6th century.
The script drew mainly on Greek; scholars debate whether Latin or runic models also contributed. An etymological entry cites a related Germanic runic h-name from ca. 200. This connects the naming traditions but does not prove that this exact Gothic letterform descended from a rune.
What does 𐌷 mean when someone sends it alone?
Read a lone 𐌷 as a reference to Gothic writing. It may point to the letter, the script, or a transcription; context decides which.
𐌷 is a Gothic letter; ᚺ is a separate runic h-letter. As of 2026, reporting documents the Hagall rune in pagan and Nordic settings and in Nazi or neo-Nazi uses. Those associations belong to the rune, not automatically to 𐌷.
A historical letter; a lone message is hard to decode without context.
Do not assign the separate Haglaz rune’s political associations to 𐌷.
