Hangul Choseong Mieum

7/256

ᄆ is the Hangul jamo Mieum, a Korean consonant used at the start of a syllable. It has the m sound, as in “mama.” Alone, it is a syllable part, not a complete word; ㅁ is its related stand-alone form, while Korean input usually builds a block such as 마.

What ᄆ means

It supplies the opening consonant in a Hangul syllable block.

ᄆ is a leading Hangul component, or jamo, that joins a vowel in a block such as 마. By itself, it is an incomplete syllable part, not a complete Korean word.

The surviving record of Hangul's creation dates to 1443, and the 1446 Hunminjeongeum text explains its purpose and design. Hangul gave Korean speakers a learnable way to write their language when Chinese-character writing was difficult to use. In 1894, Hangul became Korea's official writing system; this changed the script's public status, not Mieum's role.

Why does ᄆ join a vowel?

Hangul builds syllables from alphabetic parts.

The basic Hangul consonant ㅁ was designed from the closed shape of the lips. The traditional design adds strokes to that basic shape to form the related consonants ㅂ and ㅍ.

Unicode distinguishes the positions: ᄆ begins a syllable, ᆷ closes one, and ㅁ is a stand-alone compatibility form. They represent Mieum in different roles; those roles determine how the text assembles, not the consonant's basic sound.

How do I type ᄆ?

Use Korean input for syllables and Unicode input for this exact form.

As of 2026, the Korean 2-set (Dubeolsik) layout maps A to ㅁ; type a vowel next and the input method builds a block such as 마.

For exact U1106, use a Unicode-aware character picker or an input method that supports code-point entry. Ordinary Korean input may produce ㅁ or a composed syllable instead.

Technical and educational: isolated ᄆ reads as a Hangul syllable component.

Use ㅁ when you need the ordinary stand-alone compatibility form.

1

Why does ᄆ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
