What ᄅ means
It starts a Korean syllable block. Add a vowel Jamo and the two can form one block: 라 can display as 라. Alone, ᄅ is a syllable-building component, not ordinary standalone Korean spelling; ㄹ is the spacing form for a lone letter.
Hangul was devised under King Sejong because Chinese-character writing was a poor fit for Korean; it aimed to make the language easier to read and write. Before Hangul, Koreans used Chinese characters to write their language through systems such as Idu, Hyangchal, and Gugyeol. The Sejong annals record Hangul in 1443; a 1446 guide to the script lists rieul among its initial consonants. A proposed influence from the Phags-pa script, another writing system, remains debated and is not an established ancestor of Hangul.
Why does isolated ᄅ look unfinished?
It lacks the vowel that completes its syllable block. A font or app may render isolated ᄅ small, high, or awkwardly spaced when it does not shape conjoining Jamo as expected. That is a display quirk, not a different consonant. For a letter that stands alone, ㄹ is the spacing form.
Romanized Korean writes rieul as r or l according to its position in a syllable. South Korean spelling changes some word-initial rieul forms, while North Korean spelling keeps ㄹ in corresponding words.
How can I enter the leading jamo?
Choose the leading Jamo entry in a Unicode picker. Search for the character’s full name and select the conjoining choseong, not the spacing form ㄹ.
A Korean input method usually combines consonants and vowels into a syllable. Entering only ᄅ depends on the IME; some offer a raw-Jamo option, while others keep composing.
Technical or educational: ᄅ is a raw syllable-building component, not an ordinary standalone letter or message reaction.
A lone ᄅ can look like a half-built syllable; use ㄹ for an isolated letter.
