Hangul Final Rieul

176/256

ᆯ is the final-slot form of rieul, a Korean consonant, in a Hangul syllable block; that final position is called jongseong or batchim (받침). It usually appears inside a complete syllable such as 말, rather than on its own. Korean romanization writes rieul as l at a word end.

What ᆯ means

It marks rieul as the optional final consonant in a Hangul block.

Hangul arranges a syllable's initial consonant, vowel, and optional final consonant into one block. ᆯ occupies that last slot.

The early Hangul work Hunminjeongeum is first recorded in 1443; its explanatory guide, Haerye, appeared in 1446. Hangul was designed for accessible everyday writing, with consonants and vowels arranged into syllable blocks.

Why is rieul written with l at a word end?

Korean romanization writes rieul as l at a word end.

Korean rieul is usually written r before a vowel and l before a consonant or at a word end. Its spoken sound also shifts with neighboring sounds, so r and l are a guide to position, not two different consonants.

Hangul's final-consonant set changed over time. The Haerye used initial letters in the final slot, and early writing also had finals later dropped from ordinary use. Everyday writing used a smaller set of final consonants after the 16th century.

How do I type the Hangul final rieul?

Use a Korean input method and type ㄹ after a vowel.

Dubeolsik is a common two-set Korean keyboard layout: f produces ㄹ, and a k f produces 말. The input method uses context to place ㄹ at the end of this block or at the start of the next.

An isolated ᆯ can stay separate in apps without Hangul trailing-jamo shaping. Use a Korean input method for a complete syllable; use Unicode hex entry when you specifically need the isolated character.

Technical and orthographic: it belongs in Hangul composition, text debugging, or an explanation of Korean spelling.

Ordinary Korean writing uses a composed syllable; isolated ᆯ signals work on Hangul's underlying parts.

Questions people ask

1

Why can ᆯ appear separately?

It can: without Hangul trailing-jamo shaping, an isolated final jamo may remain separate. A Korean input method normally builds it into a complete syllable block.
