Imperial Aramaic Letter Resh

20/31

𐡓 is Resh, the Aramaic letter for the /r/ sound. By itself it is a letter sample, not a word; its script later gave rise to forms used in square Hebrew and other writing systems.

What 𐡓 means

It is the Aramaic letter Resh, representing /r/.

Inside an Aramaic word, Resh contributes the /r/ sound; alone, it has no word meaning. The letter name is traditionally linked to a word for “head,” an old name association rather than a meaning of the letter in a message.

Aramaeans adopted alphabetic writing derived from Phoenician forms in the 11th or 10th century BCE. Aramaic writing had diverged by the mid-8th century BCE and was standardized by the end of the 8th century BCE.

Why was Imperial Aramaic used?

It served practical communication across large empires.

Aramaic became an administrative language of the Assyrian Empire and then an official language of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Its alphabetic writing carried correspondence, contracts, legal documents, and imperial messages.

As the script developed into regional forms, it became a historical source for square Hebrew, Nabataean, Palmyrene, Arabic, and Middle Iranian scripts.

Why does 𐡓 look like Hebrew?

Square Hebrew developed from Imperial Aramaic writing.

Modern Hebrew resh, ר, is a related later letter, not another font for 𐡓. A Hebrew reader may recognize the historical connection, but the two characters belong to different scripts.

Imperial Aramaic Daleth, 𐡃, can have the same written shape as Resh. In an inscription, the word and its context may be needed to tell them apart.

Alone, 𐡓 reads as a historical-letter sample or deliberate Imperial Aramaic styling.

For the ordinary Latin letter r, use r.

Why is 𐡓 showing as a box?

The font may not include Imperial Aramaic. Use a font with support for the script; the missing shape is a display problem, not a different character.
