What ר means
It represents r; read the whole word for its meaning. The name reish is traditionally linked to a Semitic word for “head”: letters were named after words beginning with their sound.
Its ancestry reaches early alphabetic writing in Egypt and Sinai. Inscriptions at Wadi el-Hol in Egypt have a proposed date around 1850 BCE, though early alphabetic dating is debated. These traditions developed among Semitic speakers in contact with Egyptian culture; uses included religious dedications.
The modern square shape developed through Aramaic script, adopted for Hebrew during the Persian period. The older script, called Paleo-Hebrew, continued on coins, in inscriptions and in some manuscripts. This is an evolving letterform, not a symbol invented in its present shape.
Why does Hebrew resh sound different?
Its pronunciation depends on the speaker’s Hebrew tradition. Standard Israeli Hebrew commonly forms ר at the back of the mouth, unlike English r. Tongue-tip taps or trills survive in Mizrahi and Yemenite traditions—Jewish communities from the Middle East and Yemen—and in religious reading and singing.
A speaker’s resh can reflect community background or a religious reading tradition.
Do not automatically correct a rolled resh: it can be traditional Hebrew pronunciation.

3Questions people ask
1Can resh take a dagesh?
Yes, exceptionally. Tiberian pointing, the system of marks used in Hebrew Bibles, usually leaves resh without dagesh forte, a dot indicating consonant doubling. A few biblical forms include it; the dot does not make a different letter.
