What ק means
It represents a consonant, not a standalone word. Read it with the surrounding text. In Hebrew numeral notation, ק represents 100.
Qof evolved within the alphabet to record a speech sound. Early Hebrew writing appears in the first millennium BCE; the later square Hebrew form developed through script derived from Aramaic, another Semitic language.
Why is qof written q?
The q identifies the letter, not just its sound. Academic transliteration—writing Hebrew letters in Latin letters—uses q for ק and k for כ, keeping different Hebrew spellings distinct.

Questions people ask
2Why does punctuation move beside ק?
Mixed writing directions. Hebrew reads right to left; Latin text reads left to right. In a mixed message, punctuation placement depends on the surrounding text.
Does qof change at the end of a word?
No. Use the same ק at the end of a Hebrew word.
