arabic letter qaf

Arabic Letter Qaf

ق is qaf, usually written as q in Latin letters: an Arabic consonant whose meaning comes from the word around it. Its pronunciation varies by dialect and can carry social associations. At the start of a Quran chapter, it has a special use as a recited letter whose interpretation is debated.

What ق means

It marks a consonant within a word. Qaf is commonly represented by q in Latin-letter transliteration, often called the “Arabic q.” Optional vowel marks help show how to pronounce the word.

Qaf developed with Arabic writing, which grew from Nabataean Aramaic through a transitional Nabataeo-Arabic stage. Dated inscriptions with the full Arabic letter repertoire appear by the late fifth century CE; that dates the script, not qaf's first separate appearance.

Phoenician qōp, Aramaic qop, Hebrew qof, Syriac qoph and Latin Q belong to its historical letter family. They are related forms from different writing traditions, not interchangeable spellings.

Why does qaf sound different?

Dialects can change the sound while the spelling stays ق.

An account of Amman, Jordan, published in 2019 describes qaf pronounced as q, g, k or a glottal stop—a brief closure in the throat. The choice can signal regional or social background. Don't assume the spelling tells you which pronunciation a speaker uses.

Arabizi writes Arabic with Latin letters and digits. A 2012 study of Levantine Facebook writing recorded 2, q and 8 for qaf. In Jordanian writing in that study, 8 could stand for q or g, leaving that distinction open; this is not a universal Arabizi rule.

A lone ق needs context

ق opens Surah Qaf, a chapter of the Quran, and is recited as the letter's name. It belongs to the Quranic opening-letter tradition, in which letters are read separately rather than as a word. Interpretations differ, so this special use gives a lone ق in an ordinary message no fixed meaning.

Ordinary in Arabic spelling; spoken pronunciations and Arabizi choices can carry social associations.

Don't infer a pronunciation from the spelling alone.

Why does ق look different in Quranic writing?

Writing traditions use different dotting. In the Hafs tradition, qaf has two dots above. In the Warsh-associated tradition, it has one above at the start or middle of a word, and none at the end or when it stands alone.
