devanagari letter qa

Devanagari Letter Qa

89/128

क़ marks the q sound in Devanagari, using a dot beneath क to distinguish it from ordinary k. It carries a sound associated with Urdu qaf into Hindi-style writing, though everyday pronunciation and spelling may merge it with क. The same letter can also be written क़, the decomposed form recommended for Hindi text.

Text symbol

What क़ means

It marks a consonant made farther back than ordinary क.

The nukta dot marks /q/, the sound associated with Urdu qaf ق. In Hindi-style Devanagari, क़ appears in loanwords whose spelling keeps that distinction; some speakers pronounce it like /k/ and write plain क. Here the dot marks a sound and spelling distinction.

Why does क़ have a dot?

It adapts a familiar letter to mark a sound Devanagari lacked.

Writers added a dot beneath a familiar consonant to represent Perso-Arabic sounds absent from Devanagari's traditional sound set. This approach echoes the use of dots to distinguish letters in Arabic writing.

The earliest dated setting supplied for this history is Devanagari metal type cast in 1786 and used in a 1789 book containing Sanskrit and Urdu verses. That documents multilingual printing, not the first appearance of क़. Its Urdu counterpart is ق; related Devanagari dotted letters include ख़, ग़, ज़ and फ़.

Should I keep the dot?

Keep it when the spelling needs to distinguish /q/ from /k/.

As of 2026, everyday Hindi spelling may omit the dot when speakers pronounce the sound like /k/ or write casually. In Urdu text written in Devanagari, the dot can preserve the link to Urdu qaf. A dot alone does not identify who wrote the message.

During the late 19th-century Hindi–Urdu controversy, script and vocabulary became visible markers of cultural alignment. Hindi and Urdu share a Hindustani base but use different writing traditions; retaining this dot carries a spelling distinction across them.

A language-specific spelling and pronunciation mark; it is not a reaction.

Without the dot, a marked /q/ may look like plain क; check the word before changing it.
