Devanagari Vowel Sign Uue

88/128

In Kashmiri (Koshur) written in Devanagari, ॗ marks a long central vowel after a consonant. It is a matra, or vowel sign, attached to a syllable. By itself, it is an incomplete fragment without the consonant it modifies.

Text symbol

What ॗ means

It marks a Kashmiri consonant with the long central vowel. The sound is /ɨː/ in IPA, made with the tongue near the middle of the mouth. This matra is used after a consonant; ॷ is the independent letter for a vowel-initial syllable, and ॖ marks the shorter counterpart.

Earlier spellings used candra, a small moon-shaped mark, with ordinary u signs for the short and long central vowels. The newer signs adapt Devanagari's candra. A proposal cites Kashmiri vowel material published in 1889 but does not establish that ॗ already had its present shape. It traces the dedicated spelling to a reform approved on 4 August 2002, and cites a 2002 primer, a 2003 reader, and a 2007 Härvan publication using the newer signs.

Kashmiri Devanagari reforms are dated 1995, 2002, and 2009. Kashmiri also has Perso-Arabic and Sharada script traditions, with their own spelling conventions, so the same vowel may be written differently across scripts.

How do I type ॗ?

Enter it after the Kashmiri consonant it modifies.

The stored order is consonant first, sign second, even when shaping draws the mark elsewhere. At the start of a vowel-initial syllable, use independent ॷ; ॗ needs a base consonant.

Use a Unicode input method that supports this sign rather than a Gurmukhi substitute. A 2006 proposal reports that Gurmukhi vowel signs used as stand-ins failed to attach to Devanagari letters in Pango and Uniscribe, two text-shaping systems.

Specialized Kashmiri spelling: this mark belongs inside written Kashmiri syllables.

By itself, it has no consonant to modify.

Can I use ॗ in Hindi?

No. It is specific to Kashmiri Devanagari spelling; ordinary Hindi spelling does not use it.

Why is ॗ not showing correctly?

It may be a rendering problem. This dependent sign needs a base consonant and Devanagari shaping support; check it within the word it modifies.
