What ف means
It usually writes the “f” sound.
In Arabic grammar, the attached prefix فـ can link what follows to an earlier clause, giving a sense such as “then” or “so.” The exact connection depends on the sentence.
Arabic script developed from Nabataean Aramaic, an older writing system, during the first millennium CE. Recognizably Arabic inscriptions appear by the late fifth century CE. The letter belongs to the script’s history as a written consonant. Related letters in this wider historical family include Phoenician 𐤐, Aramaic 𐡐, Hebrew פ, and Syriac ܦ.
Why does ف change shape?
Its written form joins to the letters around it.
Arabic runs from right to left. Fa can join on both sides, so the same letter has different forms when isolated or at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. The font shapes it from its neighbors; these forms do not require different letters.
The dot also matters. Dot conventions vary across Arabic-script traditions, including Maghrebi writing from northwest Africa. A related Maghrebi form, ڢ, places its dot below and is encoded as a separate character.
Ordinary Arabic letter; alone, it can identify the letter or stand for a fragment of text.

Questions people ask
1Why does ف show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
