Arabic Letter Ain

51/249

ع is the Arabic letter ʿayn (also spelled ain or ayn), a voiced consonant squeezed from deep in the throat. In Arabizi, which is Arabic typed with Latin letters and digits, the digit 3 stands for it because 3 looks like a mirrored ع. The letter changes shape as it joins its neighbours, but it stays the same character.

What ع means

It writes the Arabic consonant ʿayn. You make it by tightening the throat while your vocal cords vibrate; linguists write the sound /ʕ/. In Latin-letter transliteration, a raised hook ʿ marks it, as in the spelling ʿayn. The name means “eye,” a memory of the older sign's shape, but in Arabic the letter stands for a sound, not a picture.

How did ع become an Arabic letter?

It was inherited from an older Semitic alphabet tradition. A circular ancestral form appears in a Northwest Semitic inscription dated to the late 11th–early 10th century BCE, and an Aramaic inscription from the 9th century BCE gives the circle a pupil. These are earlier stages of the letter, not the modern Arabic drawing.

Arabic script grew out of Nabataean Aramaic, an older regional writing system, during the first half of the first millennium CE. By the late fifth century CE, inscriptions around Ḥimā, in what is now southwestern Saudi Arabia, show a fuller set of Arabic letters, with the inherited sign still writing this throat consonant.

What does 3 mean in Arabic texting?

Inside an Arabizi word, 3 stands for ع. Arabizi (also called Arabish or Franco-Arabic) writes Arabic with Latin letters plus digits for sounds Latin lacks, and spellings vary by dialect. Read the digit as the consonant when it sits inside an Arabic word, as in ma3a (“with”).

Arabic script is the usual choice for formal writing. In casual messages, 3 works when your reader knows Arabizi; someone who doesn't may just see a number in the middle of a word.

ع is an ordinary Arabic letter; writing it as 3 belongs to informal Arabizi and depends on the reader knowing it.

A lone 3 may simply mean three. Check the surrounding message.

Why does ع look different inside a word?

It is the same letter. Arabic joins neighbouring letters, and the font automatically shows the matching connected form at the start, middle or end of a word.
