What ֜ means

It marks a phrase break in the biblical chant. Hebrew Bible cantillation groups words for reading; in prose, Qadma (֨) can precede Geresh in the Qadma–Azla pattern.

Masoretic codices—Hebrew Bible manuscripts—attest written cantillation from the ninth century, preserving older oral chant. Babylonian, Palestinian and Tiberian traditions used distinct systems. In 2018, Noto Fonts reported ֜ positioned too far left in Noto Sans Hebrew and Noto Serif Hebrew; a font can detach it from its base letter.
