hebrew accent tevir

Hebrew Accent Tevir

Tevir ֛ is a Hebrew Bible cantillation mark, or trope: it marks a small phrase break and cues the chant, rather than a vowel. Its Aramaic name means “broken”; the written cue is stable, while its melody varies by text and reading tradition.

What ֛ means

Tevir marks a small break in a verse and cues its chant. In Hebrew biblical reading, it is a disjunctive cantillation mark (a trope): it separates a subordinate phrase and marks the word’s stress.

It is not a vowel point. The Aramaic name means “broken,” referring to its interrupted melody.

How did tevir become a written mark?

The mark developed within a regional reading system.

The Tiberian accent system developed around Tiberias over several generations by the ninth century. Earlier Babylonian and Palestinian traditions used different written signs; Tiberian notation later became the dominant written form. Jewish scribes called Masoretes preserved pronunciation, phrasing, stress, and chant with these marks.

A note at the end of the Cairo Codex of the Prophets is dated 895, while the surviving manuscript is likely from the eleventh century. This points to an evolving system, not a mark with one neat invention date. Scholars debate whether cantillation first recorded melody or syntax; in practice, the signs carry both.

Why does the tune change by tradition?

The sign gives a stable cue, not one universal melody.

Settings differ by text: the Torah, the weekly Haftarah reading from the Prophets, and the festival scrolls called megillot have distinct melodies. Jewish communities also preserve different performance styles, including Eastern-Sephardi and Moroccan traditions. Tevir’s break can clarify which words belong together; the accents record chant and speech rhythm rather than modern punctuation.

A specialist mark for Hebrew biblical reading and study; outside that setting, it can look like damaged text.

It marks a phrase break, not a vowel point.

Can Tevir change the meaning of a verse?

It can. A different phrase break can clarify which words belong together, although the accents record chant and speech rhythm rather than acting like modern punctuation.
