What ز means
It sounds like the z in “zebra.”
Zay writes the z consonant inside words in Arabic and in Persian and Urdu. Arabic writing developed gradually from Nabataean Aramaic, an older writing tradition; it was not invented at a single moment. Early Arabic inscriptions with a full Arabic letter repertoire appear near Ḥimā in the late fifth century CE. The Zuhayr inscription, dated 644–645 CE, also uses consonant points. These are milestones in the script’s development, not this letter’s birthday.
Why does ز look disconnected?
It joins to the letter on its right, not its left.
Arabic is written from right to left. ز can join to the preceding letter on its right when that letter allows it, but it cannot join to the following letter on its left. The written shape changes with its position, while the letter stays the same.
Does ز sound the same in Urdu?
Yes, and some other Urdu letters can also sound like z.
Urdu uses ز for z, including in English loanwords. In some words inherited from Arabic, ذ, ض, and ظ can also be pronounced z. The spelling follows the word’s established history, so matching pronunciation does not make these letters interchangeable.
Inside a word, it is an ordinary letter; on its own, it is usually just an incomplete letter.
Without the dot, ز becomes ر, a different letter.
