What ش means
It represents “sh,” as in the English word “shop.” Urdu uses this same character for the same sound in its Arabic-derived writing system.
In some Arabic dialect spellings, final ش also helps form negation. In the Cairo example ما قالش it means “he did not say”; in the Amman example ما بدناش it means “we do not want.” The letter keeps its sound while also doing grammatical work.
Why does ش have three dots?
The dots distinguish “sh” from the “s” letter س. They belong to the letter; they are not optional vowel marks.
Arabic script developed through Nabataean Aramaic, an earlier writing tradition. A full Arabic letter repertoire is attested by the late fifth century CE; distinguishing dots became common in the second half of the seventh century. Hebrew ש and Syriac ܫ belong to related shin traditions.
Why does ش change shape?
Its outline adapts to the letters beside it.
ش can join on either side when its neighbors permit. A font draws its appropriate form when it stands alone or at the beginning, middle, or end of a connected group. The underlying letter stays the same.
An ordinary letter: tone comes from the word and sentence around it.
Keep the dots: without them, “sh” becomes “s.”

1Why does ش show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
