61/143

As of 2026, in Word, type 1EE54 and press Alt+X; select only the code if another hexadecimal character immediately precedes it. This is the Arabic letter sheen in a distinctive mathematical shape, not a separate spoken letter. It does not join to neighboring letters.

What 𞹔 means

As of 2026, type 1EE54 in Word and press Alt+X.

The same 2026 Word instructions say to select only 1EE54 if other hexadecimal characters come immediately before it.

The result is the tailed math-style form of Arabic sheen, used in Arabic-script mathematical expressions.

Where did Arabic math letter styles come from?

They grew from an older Arabic-script mathematical tradition.

Arabic math uses letter shapes such as tailed, initial, stretched, looped, or double-struck to expand the set of distinct symbols, much as italic or bold letters do in Latin-based math. Arabic algebraic shorthand—signs and letter abbreviations used instead of full descriptions—is attested in the western Islamic world (lands west of Egypt) by the end of the 12th century. Unicode later encoded mathematical styles separately so their distinctions could survive in digital text.

A 2006 technical note records differences between the Maghreb (North Africa) and Mashreq (the Middle East) in symbols for sums and functions, dotting, and number styles. These local conventions change the notation around a letter, not a fixed meaning for this sheen.

Why doesn't Arabic mathematical sheen join?

It is a standalone math character, so it does not join.

Unicode 16.0 (2024) says Arabic mathematical symbols do not undergo ordinary Arabic letter shaping: 𞹔 keeps its encoded form instead of changing to connect to a neighbor.

Why does 𞹔 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Arabic Mathematical Alphabetic Symbols block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
