What ن means
It usually represents the Arabic n sound. The letter name is written nūn, nun, or noon. Traditional accounts connect the name with “fish,” but the letter itself does not mean fish. At the opening of Qur'an chapter 68, ن stands alone as one of the disjointed initials, whose interpretation is debated.
Arabic script developed from Nabataean Aramaic, an older regional writing tradition. Inscriptions showing a full Arabic letter repertoire are attested by the late fifth century CE. Latin N belongs to a related branch through Phoenician and Greek; it does not descend from the Arabic letter.
Is ن a Christian symbol?
It can be; the post around it gives the clue. In ordinary Arabic writing, ن is simply a letter.
In Mosul, Iraq, in 2014, reports described ISIS marking Christian property with ن, used as a label for Nasrani, meaning Nazarene or Christian. Christians and supporters later used the mark in profile pictures and hashtags such as #WeAreN and #IamNasrani to show solidarity. A caption or accompanying account can distinguish solidarity from documentation of persecution.
Why does ن change shape?
Its displayed form changes as it joins neighbouring letters. A font shows different shapes when ن stands alone or appears at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. These are positional forms of the same underlying character.
Arabic text systems handle this joining automatically. Separately encoded presentation forms represent particular shapes for legacy use; they are not needed for ordinary Arabic writing.
Neutral as an Arabic letter; politically or religiously charged when used as an emblem.
A lone ن does not prove extremist intent. Read the post's caption and context.

Questions people ask
2Is dotless nūn the same character?
No. Separately encoded dotless forms are used in some other Arabic-script languages or historical typesetting. They are distinct from ordinary dotted ن.
Is it spelled nun or noon?
Both spellings name the Arabic letter in Latin letters. Scholarly nūn marks the long vowel; all three refer to the same letter.
